Saturday 22 October

Walk name: Helvellyn
Date: 22/10/11
Start Grid Reference:NY369173
Nearest Town: Glenridding
Start time: 11:00
Start Location: Helvellyn Youth Hostel - see note below.
Car Share: Morton Park, opposite McDonalds. 09:00
Grade: Strenuous - this walk is not suitable for beginners or inexperienced walkers.
Distance: 7 miles
Longer Description: Please note, that several members of the group are staying at Helvellyn Youth Hostel over the course of the weekend and therefore we will not be at the car share. Parking at Helvellyn youth hostel is limited. From Helvellyn Youth Hostel, we will start the walk by contouring round Birkhouse Moor before climbing to the summit for a short break overlooking Ullswater. We will then continue the climb to the start of Striding Edge at the 'Hole in the Wall.' Striding Edge is a stony climb - crags and scree fall away from either side and portray a breathtaking and quite dramatic scene. The traverse of the edge is relatively easy in normal conditions and can be made easier by following the path that exists alongside and lower than the main arête. The trickiest part is at the Helvellyn end when a scramble is required to descend the 7 metres or so of a rock tower known as The Chimney. There is however, an alternative path and easier descent which means this difficult section can be avoided.

From the summit of Helvellyn, we will descend via Swirral Edge to take in the summit of Catstye Cam, before returning to the youth hostel alongside Red Tarn Beck.
